Our Petition

We, the undersigned, oppose the reckless expansion of the Dakar Metropolitan Area and the impacts of rapid urban growth occurring without substantial actions to ensure sustainable development.
We support the effort to create a greenbelt around the city between Dakar, Thies, M’bour, and the Niayes to safeguard ecosystem services and a nature-based solution network throughout the city to enhance human well-being, improve resilience to climate change, and support green job formation.
We believe that this initiative requires governmental priority to protect key environments and should begin with the eight action sites identified by Senegalese authorities: Keur Massar, Technopole, Ndayane, Lac Mbeubeuss, Lac Rose, Foret Mbao, Forest Reserves Corridor (Bandia, Thies, Pout, Sebikotane), and the Niayes / Filao Forest.
This is just the beginning; the project must expand to encompass the entire metropolitan region. We must ensure that the city is resilient and adaptive to the new realities of climate change and economically inclusive growth!

Why This Matters:
In 1994, a group of activists in São Paulo City launched a petition (seen in image) against a proposed ring road and reckless infrastructure on the urban fringe in the Atlantic Forest intended to expand the megacity’s massive footprint. Their petition collected over 150,000 signatures before the rise of the internet (Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize for her work on greenbelts in Kenya, was a signee). Through their successful petition, these projects were altered to be more environmentally friendly, and the surrounding forest received international recognition. In the last 30 years, the greenbelt around this metropolitan area home to 26 million people has lost only 4,000 cumulative hectares. The continued protection of these lands has led to food and water security during extreme weather events, enhanced biodiversity, economic development opportunities, and other restored ecosystem services. We seek to invoke a similar movement both in and around Dakar to strengthen this great city's resilience and support a more sustainable future.
